Introductory Comments

Valiant Yachts began back in 1973 when Robert Perry was commissioned to build a new class of cruising sailboat, one with traditional styling that could be easily managed by a couple, offering an element of performance associated with racing sailboats.  Ever since, the name Valiant is synonymous with world class performance yachts and recognized throughout the world for their combination of strength, stability, performance, safety and comfort.

In 1984 current President Rich Worstell, moved the molds to Texas where the current production facility exists today. Valiant Yachts are built to order on a semi-custom basis and Engelenbakis no exception.  This is the second Valiant the current owner and experienced yachtsman has commissioned the factory to build, the 42' model being the first.  There are numerous upgrades that both benefit the livability and functionality of the vessel's basic design making her a very customized 50.

Valiant Yachts are engineered with attention to detail and maintenance.  Each system and component is designed for easy access to tanks, pumps, wiring, even the engine is readily available and removable if necessary.  All plumbing and electrical systems meet or exceed marine standards.  All Valiant hulls are totally electrically bonded and grounded.

Engelenbakis a truly exceptional sailing yacht offering that has been sailed seasonally in the Great Lakes, dry stored with a custom cover during the winter months and always maintained to the highest standards.

Interior Accommodations

Engelenbak is a two stateroom, two head, aft cockpit cruiser that has been meticulously maintained by her original and current owner as a fresh water sailboat. The entire interior is brightly finished cherry, and satin finished teak and holly cabin sole. The upholstery is a contemporary custom fabric imported from Europe, adding color and flair to the interior beauty of the vessel.

Beginning forward and aft of the chain locker, the master stateroom has a double "V" berth with a custom spring matteress and storage lockers beneath with slide out drawers. Two large hanging lockers are to starboard with a small seat below.  There are four closing lockers above the berth on both sides with reading lights aft.  Additional storage is located to starboard in a hanging locker with a small settee below. Moving aft and located on the portside is the forward stateroom head with vanity and mirror.

The main salon is the full beam of the yacht with a straight bench settee to starboard and an U-shaped settee to port, facing a very large drop-leaf table that is on the centerline. There are bookshelves and lockers above and outboard of the settees.  The owner had the factory build a custom wine rack located at the forward end of the port settee with book shelf above.

The U-shaped galley, to port, is open to the salon and has excellent counter space topped in Corian, generous locker and drawer storage, and oversize top-loading refrigeration and freezer space located under the forward counter for added volume and convenience. Galley equipment is listed further on in this description.

Opposite the galley, to starboard, is the forward facing navigation station, with comfortable seat and full size lift top desk. All instruments and displays are properly laid out, and there is a bookshelf adjacent to the main breaker panel. Also in this area are 110-volt outlets and a 12-volt cigarette-type plug. The bench type Nav. seat opens to provide additional storage below.

Aft of the Nav area are two lockers, one with four sliding shelves for pots and pans as well as canned goods, the other above. Next aft to starboard is the second head with separate stall shower forward.  The Corian topped vanity is outward facing with a large storage area accessed through the counter top.  An access panel facing aft allows passage to the work area and fuel filters, battery charger and front of the engine.

The guest stateroom is on the portside of the companionway. The large double berth is outboard, with drawers under and a locker with shelving is outboard.  The owner ordered a custom cabinet inboard of the berth with drawers and shelving.

There are fourteen opening cabin trunk ports, six deck hatches, and two chrome dorade ventilators provide light and air for the heads. This is augmented by two reverse cycle air conditioning units, serving forward, salon and aft cabins.

Hull & Deck Construction

The hull is one piece, solid fiberglass, hand laminated alternate layers of mat and woven roving.  The deck is of hand laminated, balsa cored fiberglass for strength/weight ratio with high density structural foam in high stress areas.  Isophthalic resin is used throughout the entire layup of hull, deck and all other fiberglass components.  The resin is hand-batched and catalyzed in one-gallon increments.  The catalyst/resin mixture is dyed to achieve the proper wet-out technique.

The rudder is fabricated in fiberglass hand-laminated exterior structural parts, with solid stainless steel rudder shaft welded to an internal steel core, and encased in resin and foam.

The skeg has fiberglass hand-laminated exterior structural parts with internal steel welding encased in resin and foam.  Skeg is glassed to hull and through-bolted with 10 stainless steel bolts with a one-piece stainless steel backing plate.

The keel has external mounted lead ballast, 3M 5200 sealant.  Through-bolted with 18 -  ¾" stainless steel J bolts incorporating stainless steel backing plates

The deck is mechanically joined to the hull with through bolts and bedded with 3M 5200 sealant, and the hull has ½" closed cell foam interior insulation from the waterline to the sheer.

The bulkheads are bonded with fiberglass to the hull and deck with tie plates to floor structures.  All the furniture is fiberglassed and bonded to the hull and deck.. The hull is insulated with ½" closed cell foam from the waterline to the sheer.  The engine room is lined with one inch Sound Stop lined foam throughout to provide thermal and acoustic insulation.

Closing Remarks

The Valiant 50' is the flagship of the company's highly regarded successful designs.  Engelenbak, a 2000 model, offers an exceptionally well equipped and maintained example.  The experienced yachtsman who built her wanted a strong, safe, attractive, quality-built yacht that could be handled shorthanded and was set up to go anywhere in the world.  No expense was spared during the building and maintenance after delivery.  Engelenbak has had very light use on the Great Lakes since new.
