Tug propulsion has been revolutionised over the years with the advent of the voith and azimuthing drives.
Azimuthing drives use conventional propellers that can be rotated a full 360 degrees to provide thrust in any direction without a rudder. Such a configuration is commonly known as “Z” drive. The name "Z-Drive" is derived from the drive shaft configuration which is horizontal off the engine, vertical through the hull, and horizontal at the propeller hub, thus forming a rough outline of a letter Z.
On a Voith-Schneider Propeller the blades project below the ship hull and rotate about a vertical axis, having an oscillatory motion about its own axis superimposed on this uniform motion. The blade's oscillating movement determines the magnitude of thrust through variation of the amplitude, the phase correlation determining the thrust direction between 0 and 360 degrees. It is mounted inside a protective nozzle on the bottom of the ship to protect it against underwater obstructions and from ships hulls.
Most of the room in the tug is below the waterline and is needed to accommodate a very large engine. This will drive one of more of a wide range of propeller forms, with some tugs have one engine per propeller.

A fully loaded tanker can cause severe ecological damage if oil is spilled through a hole in the hull. One method of preventing that damage is to ensure that the tanker is under control at all stages of its journey. Ships that lose power or steering ability in a narrow or crowded waterway may be involved in a collision or grounding, but a new class of tugboats has been developed which can control tankers at high speeds in the event of a system failure. These vessels have a fin or skeg to provide the steering force.

The diagram shows the logical arrangement of the basic components of a Voiyh Schneider Drive system
1. The Voith Schneider Propellers are located in the forebody, with free inflow and outflow in all directions. The thrust forces act ahead of the vessel axis of rotation.
2. Fitted underneath the propellers is a protective guard that exerts a nozzle effect and increases propeller thrust. It also protects the propeller blades against running aground and supports the vessel in dock.
3. The hull is an integrated part of the system, creating lift for the indirect steering principle and ensuring low resistance in transit.
4. Located underneath the aft body is an effective skeg for steering and braking assistance of the tow, shaped to create lifting force. The skeg shifts the centre of lateral resistance aft, thus increasing leverage between propeller thrust and pivot point. It also ensures adequate course stability when running either bow or skeg first.
5. The towing gear (staple and winch) is located aft of the vessel's centre of rotation.
6. The Voith Water Tractor is operated from the control stand in the wheelhouse. One or several synchronised control stands, depending on the size of the vessel, can be installed. The steering system is usually connected mechanically to the propellers, permitting direct control of the system with no risk of steering system failure.
