Introductory Comments

MONA LISA is designed to be a rugged expedition yacht that is fast and comfortable.  The design goal was to produce an extremely strong, luxury expedition yacht for blue water live-aboard world cruising with many valued special features for cold, harsh weather, extreme climates and ice.  The yacht is equipped with a drop keel, enclosed pilothouse, exterior cockpit and a dinghy garage.  All functions and systems on the yacht are designed and engineered for single-handed operations by a man 50 years of age or easily sailed by a husband and wife without crew.

Tim Jeffery in his SAIL Magazine article calls MONA LISA "a mini super yacht."  He went on to say "by that I mean that all the engineering services and features of a 150 ton-displacement 120 footer have been incorporated into a boat that is half the length and roughly a quarter of the weight.  What designer Van de Stadt and Dutch builder Trintella have achieved is phenomenal; the boat has very sophisticated onboard facilities and equipment but is undeniably simple to sail.  MONA LISA, a semi-custom Trintella that gives her owners a passport to the world."

MONA LISA is fully equipped and ready for offshore cruising and to sail around the world in safety and in comfort and was designed and built without regard to cost to be the ultimate luxury expedition 60' sailboat.  A myriad of special features that are critical to achieving the optimal world cruiser are included.  Examples are: heated enclosed pilothouse; transom garage for secure storage of the dinghy; hydraulic anchor storage system; custom-engineered high-tech thermal and sound insulation; cabinsole which floats on sound insulation; life rails (not wire rope) are stainless steel pipe with all welds highly polished with no visible weld beads; highly polished stainless steel custom Wigo portlights; leveling pilothouse chair and dining table; large gourmet galley; hydraulic keel (lifting keel); recirculating hot water conservation; six high capacity bilge pumps in four watertight compartments; carbon fiber AeroRig by Carbospars; forward looking sonar; abundant electric outlets both Euro 220v and USA 110v throughout the yacht; scuba compressor.  Redundant equipment and electronics include: VHFs, radars, MF radios, autopilots, GPSs, running lights, fresh water pumps, refrigeration compressors and more, air-cooled and water-cooled 220v/24v refrigeration compressors.

MONA LISA is an ideal cruising yacht for a couple, or she could be used as a research vessel by a team.  She carries substantial fuel and cargo, and is capable of being self sufficient for months.  If you are looking for a limitless bluewater adventure in Chile, research in Antarctica, whale watching in Alaska, sailing in the glaciers of Greenland, watching the pelagic birds in the southern ocean, or scuba diving in Tahiti, MONA LISA is an excellent design.

Interior Accommodations

Mona Lisa features a large pilothouse with a two stateroom arrangement.  Both the master cabin forward and guest cabin aft have en suite heads.  The comfortable lower salon is attractively appointed with an impressive navigation station/desk at the forward end.  The passageway galley offers excellent counter and storage space and leads to the workroom and well organized machinery room.

The interior finish is upgraded from Trintella standard; interior design was done by A.R. Design - Arnold de Ruyter.  The interior joinery is matched light varnished teak with dark green leather chairs and cushions.  The entire cabin sole is teak and holly and is removable for 100% access to the areas beneath the cabin sole; all boards lock in place with Lips keyed throw-bolts.  All floorboards "float" on sound reduction padding.  Each floorboard is teak with inlaid holly.

The Galley counters are Magna Rainforest (dark green) Corian with inlaid Magna Sahara (beige) trim.
The Corian in the forward owner's head is Magna Sahara (beige) with cameo white inlaid trim.
The Corian in the guest aft head is Magana Mediterranean (blue) with cameo white inlaid trim
The pilothouse dining table top tilts to any selected angle for meals under sail.
The salon table can be adjusted to any height; dinner versus cocktails.
The pilot's chair pivots for watchkeeping under sail.

Much of the interior lighting is on dimmer switches.

Hull

Aluminum hull, deck and superstructure.  MONA LISA is an extremely strong yacht.  She was built for expedition cruising in all climates including harsh weather.  She has a special insulation package for hull and deck, engineering by Van Cappellen.  Mounting hardware is welded throughout the hull and deck for fastening Illbruck multi-laminate panels plus vapor barrier.  The dorade vents can be closed watertight from inside the vessel.  The hull strength was upgraded from the standard Trintella.  The frames are 40 cm apart and the hull skin schedule was increased over all.  The hull skin underwater and to a level 200mm above the W/L, the thickness is 8mm.  The topsides are 6mm and the deck is 5mm.  The alloy for the hull skin is 5083.  All standpipes, seacock barbs and shaft tube are 5083.  There are three watertight bulkheads.  Within the forepeak the holding tank was arranged to serve as an additional crash bulkhead.  There is absolutely no exterior teak to maintain.  A "Barnaclean" system is fitted that repels barnacles with sound.

KEEL
The 10 ton lead bulb moves up and down so that the draft can be reduced to 6 feet (1.9m) for access to shallow anchorages, and the keel can be lowered to a draft of 11 feet (3.4m) for high performance bluewater sailing.

Mast and Rigging

MONA LISA's innovative AeroRig is strong, very easy to handle, eliminates standing rigging upkeep and offers uncluttered decks.  Sails are made by Hood, UK.  The main is fully battened Vectran, 100 square meters, fitted with a "Lazy Jack" sail catcher.  The jib is Vectran, 40 sq m, set on a Profurl manual furler LC-42, with the furling line led to a hydraulic winch.  The storm trysail can be carried on its own track ready to hoist.

The spar is an "AeroRig" by Carbospars, UK.  The mast is all carbon fiber.  To trim all sails it is only necessary to adjust the main sheet and the AeroRig main and jib are self-tacking.  MONA LISA can beat up a river simply by turning the wheel.  Going downwind, the AeroRig really shows its advantage.  When the AeroRig runs downwind, the mainsheet is simply eased and the AeroRig becomes essentially a powerful square rigger.   As such, the AeroRig yacht is very fast design downwind without setting a cumbersome spinnaker and is much faster than a conventional wing-on-wing set up because more sail area is presented to the wind.  There is no spinnaker to hoist or pole to wrestle with.  The AeroRig is very strong.  We are informed that no AeroRig has ever been dismasted.  There are no shrouds to inspect, maintain, break or replace. Additional advantages are clear side decks and boom wings which can be walked on.

Other Features

Fiberglass catamaran Twin Vee 3.6 meters dinghy, can be stored in the garage or on the davits.

Closing Remarks

A close inspection of MONA LISA's superior construction, systems installing, exquisite cabinetry and safety features will reveal a level of quality unavailable in any yacht her size.  She is an exceptionally strong cruising expedition yacht that is easy to handle shorthanded with her innovative AeroRig and bow thruster.  Her performance and stability are excellent with her deep bulb keel that can be raised to 6' draft for entrance to thousands of harbors normally inaccessible to most 60' yachts. For a cruising couple with experience and a desire to cruise shorthanded to out-of-the-way places, Tim Jeffery of SAIL Magazine summarized that "MONA LISA is durable and filled with reliable on board systems.  Few, if any, 60' yachts have ever been better designed, engineered, built and equipped for bluewater cruising and worldwide exploration. Details and a color brochure are available upon request.
