Owner's Comments
This is a much-loved cruising sailboat designed by Stan Huntingford. Laid down with heavy fiberglass in Taiwan in 1977, it features quality construction that has long since been lost to mass-produced boats. The boat was equipped for cruising and has upgraded battery banks with ample electronics. The rigging was completely professionally upgraded in 2001 with heavier ?? stainless steel wire to provide added strength in heavy weather. The boat handles well, points to weather well, and rides comfortably in all seas. It was sailed in the rugged San Francisco Bay waters for years before being moved to the East Coast.
The interior is simply gorgeous ? thick, warm honey teak throughout affirms a quality not seen in the ?plastic? boats of today. The cabin sole is teak and in excellent condition. The main salon table is made of solid teak and is itself a centerpiece. From a base of heavy round footings, two side-drop leaves lift up and lock in place to provide comfortable and stable dining accommodation for up to five adults. Some models of this class dropped much of the teak interior in favor of white fiberglass. This boat however projects a warmth that is undeniable, impressive, even sensual.
The boat was not only used for cruising, it was a home, so it has many added comfort and safety features. It has had numerous upgrades, including replacing the hot water heater in 2004 with a new high-efficiency stainless steel tank. The galley stove is a unique Origo non-pressure alcohol stove that is odorless and extremely safe even underway. It uses individual canisters that contain a wicking material that never burns -- only the alcohol vapor is consumed. The canisters are easy to refill and last for many hours. It is gambol-mounted to keep it level in the event of heeling or a roll while locking in place while in port. The oven is equally effective with separate canisters, and can handle anything from a pizza to a casserole.
The refrigeration unit itself is a marvel of engineering. The Engel refrigerator uses a brilliantly-designed ?swing compressor? that operates flawlessly regardless of motion or heel angle. The Engle system can operate on 110v AC yet is so efficient that it draws only 0.7 amps DC, conserving your precious battery resource. It can be used full-time while under way or dockside. Engles are used by professionals everywhere - in the Outback, on trucks, for medical transport, and aboard many types of ships. The spacious interior holds 35 quarts of food or liquids, and has a lift-out wire basket for easy cleaning.
The entire electrical system was upgraded and rewired for simplicity and reliability before it left California. It features four high-capacity AGM batteries for house use, and one dedicated to starting. All battery charging and operation is monitored continuously by the Heart / Link 2000 Interface, which provides advanced digital electronic management circuitry. The backlit digital display gives you all the information you need on this critical resource.
The Furuno 1621 radar is mounted by the hatchway and easily visible at the navigation station. It also can swing outward into the companionway so that it is readily visible to the helmsman. The backlighting is adjustable, and it features selectable range markers, and adjustable STC and clutter settings. The selectable Guard Alarm can be a lifesaver while at anchor as well as underway, since it can give you an audible alarm to let you know if your anchor is dragging and you are approaching a shoreline.
Any radar is only as good as the mast-mounted scanner, and so this mounting is also unique. The radar dome is placed on a platform that is attached to a piston-dampened swing arm. This helps keep the dome level regardless of rolling, swells, or rough seas. The result is that you will see the horizon, not a cross-section of sea and sky; in other words, a reliable radar system for all conditions. Lastly, the radar display includes a NMEA connection so the data and display can be combined with navigation systems such as GPS, chartplotters, and other software.
The boat was re-powered with a reliable Yanmar engine that has fewer than 1000 hours of running time. With proper maintenance it will last indefinitely and provide reliable power in all situations. The engine has never failed to start on the first press of the starter button. The alternator is connected to the battery charging circuitry and managed with the Heart Interface to ensure reliable operation.
The boat was professionally surveyed in 1999 when purchased, and again in 2003. Both surveys confirm the boat?s condition as good to excellent and indicate no significant issues or concerns. The boat is dry, with no evidence of either mildew, dry-rot, or wood decay. It has been under continuous insurance coverage and has sustained no damage. There are no blisters on the hull evident as of the last haul-out.
You can spend more, but you will be hard pressed to find a better, more reliable, or safe sailboat. It is also a classic design, harkening back to the golden age of sail. It will turn heads and give the owner plenty of cause to smile with satisfaction whether walking by it at dock, in the cockpit, or below decks.
