Only 580 hours on completely rebuilt Detroit Diesel 8V92TI's.
All photos taken on February 9, 2007 except for the haulout photos that were taken on December 27, 2006. You have to see the layout in this vessel with a 17'10" beam. It is like being on a 70' yacht!
Particulars & Construction
The hull is a one piece hand laid up laminated Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) which includes multi-directional fiberglass, vinylester resins, and high density foam core materials. The hull structure is reinforced by plywood bulkheads bonded to the hull. The decks and superstructure are also one piece molded FRP. The hull has full length foam core stringers, stiffeners, and transverse partial bulk heading. All were sounded with a phenolic hammer where accessible, and there were no signs of weakness, delamination, or deterioration. The hull and liner are joined to the deck with water sealing gaskets, stainless screws and fasteners, and then sealed with silicone. All the deck hardware is through bolted and the stringer system is encapsulated in fiberglass and resin as they are bonded to the hull.
No faults or flaws in construction and the inspection of the hull and the interior ?where accessible? revealed there were no indications of previous damage, delamination, or blisters and it appears that the hull is sound. Ventilation throughout the vessel can be considered as good. All thru hull fittings were noted to be in good condition, fitted with shut-off valves and connected to a central bonding system.
Machinery
Sunshine is powered by twin fresh water cooled Detroit Diesel 8V92TI low profile V8 engines turbo charged intercooled with a 4.84 inch bore and a 5.0 inch stroke. The compression ratio is 17:1 and a 736 cubic inch displacement with a horsepower rating of 650 @ 2100 RPM. Both engines started quickly revealing normal smoke and good water flow.
Propulsion systems proved to be in like new condition as well as the supporting systems: Fuel, Exhaust, Air Intake, Lubrication, Seawater, and Cooling.
The engines were clean and revealed minor oil leaks and no water leaks and all fluid levels were within manufacturer?s requirements. All instruments read within normal limits of acceptability. The engine room was found to contain an ample blower system and good ventilation.
The raw water hoses and hose clamps appeared to be in serviceable condition and the fresh water system was checked with a pressure tester and it was noted to hold operational pressure and adequate coolant protection. The belts and pulleys all appear in serviceable condition and all raw water thru-hull seacocks, where visible, appear in serviceable condition.
Engines were securely mounted on their beds and all hoses were double clamped where necessary. The Racor fuel/water separators and oil filters were securely mounted according to manufacturer?s specifications and all the gate valves functioned properly. It was also noted that the starboard engine was replaced new in 2003 and the port engine was completely rebuilt and now has approximately 580 hours on the rebuild.
The steering system was also inspected and found to be in serviceable condition and the rudder logs were tight and properly aligned.
The exhaust system and associated components were examined and noted to be in compliance with section P-1 of the American Boat & Yacht Council recommended standards.
The transmission reduction gear is coupled to a stainless steel shaft and packing glands are of the conventional type and easily accessible. The shaft was found to turn true at the flex section of the shaft logs. The transmissions were engaged, no slippage was noted, and both functioned as designed. The transmission sumps were inspected with a probing magnet which revealed zero amounts of metal particles.
All observations and conditions contained in this engine evaluation were derived from external inspection only by the undersigned surveyor. A detailed internal engine and mechanical systems components inspection was neither requested nor performed.
Electrical
Vessel has twin 50 amp 120/230 volt dockside connections with 50? power cords routed to a main disconnect and the electrical distribution panel which has all the breakers marked, polarity indicators, generator switch gear, and all circuits and breakers are protected from overload.
The 12/24 volt system is provided by banks of 8-D batteries routed through disconnect switches prior to routing to the DC circuit board where all circuits and breakers are protected from overload. The 12/24 volt system is maintained by two automatic battery chargers.
The Westerbeke Diesel 20KW generator bearing serial number P/N24968 was operated for an extended period of time during which it developed its normal rated voltage under load.
All batteries were securely mounted and were tested with a hydrometer and the specific gravity was found to indicate a fully charged condition.
All wiring was Thermoplastic coated stranded copper and was inspected where accessible and found to be in good condition and meeting all National Fire Protection Association, American Boat & Yacht Council, and United States Coast Guard requirements. All of the electrical wiring and machinery has been installed in accordance with the National Fire Protection Agency 302 and American Boat & Yacht Council standards, and the vessel at this inspection is deemed to be a good fire and marine risk.
