(Sale Pending) These extraordinary sailboats are the creation of world-renowned Swedish racer/designer, Pelle Petterson. Built between 1972 and 1985 near Gothenburg, Sweden, for the rugged conditions of the North Sea, they combine ingenious design with excellence of materials and construction that places them head and shoulders above most other sailboats.
The Maxi 95,s flush deck design and lexan windows give it a beautifully sleek esthetic from the outside, and yet she also boasts superb interior headroom, from the midline out to the settees. While it is an aft-cockpit sloop, Mr. Petterson managed to incorporate an aft cabin, as well, so that this boat sleeps 7: 2 in the forepeak, 3 in the main cabin, and two (adults) in the aft cabin. The engine (Volvo diesel MD11C) is not buried behind the companionway, as in most sailboats, but rather is enclosed in the salon table. This placement provides both instant, 360-degree, unfettered access to the engine, as well as conferring upon the boat an amazing balance and stability because the engine sits mid-ships, and directly over the keel. This last factor, along with other design elements, gives the Maxi 95 a finger-light, balanced helm. (under many points of sail and wind/sea conditions, the single-handing skipper can leave the wheel-without the autopilot-go to the bow to adjust a line or sail, and return to the wheel with little or no change in compass heading!)
This boat, hull number 764 out of a total of 1500, was built in 1978, and was purchased in Sweden in that year by the president of Saab of North America, and transported here on one of Saab's ships. The present owner purchased it from the original owner in the Spring of 1979, when the latter was transferred back to Sweden. This boat has been sailed all over Lake Ontario and the 1000 Islands. It has recently updated electronics, and a new, custom-built carbon-fiber mast (2005).
The engine is in excellent condition, starts immediately, and pushes the boat at hull speed! The owner is reluctantly selling her because family conditions no longer lend themselves to sailing this wonderful boat.
In addition, a Dyer, fiberglass rowing/sailing dinghy will be included, if desired by purchaser.
