Construction

Many of the best wood vessels were built prior to World War ll, before the best quality natural grown woods and the finest fastener materials were expended for the war effort. Shiris is a recipient of the very best. The vessel is a traditionally carvel planked yacht with a backbone of English white oak with 1.5" planking consisting of teak shear strake, pitch pine planking to the garboard which are rock elm. All of this structure is secured to a 7" molded English oak keel and held by bronze floor timbers and bolts. Decks are 1.5" teak while the on deckhouse structure; skylight, etc. are all in teak.
The aft-located self-draining cockpit in varnished teak has worm gear wheel steering direct to the full keel hung rudder.  A superbly built vessel using the best available materials of the times maintained and up-dated over the years.

Accommodation

Enter the beautifully finished below decks through the varnished teak deckhouse via a half spiral American white oak staircase. Ahead of you as you descend is a built in flag locker with individual cubbies for each flag. You will note a compass repeater in the form of carved oak dowels with numbers inlet in each. Once the navigator gave the helmsman their course to steer he then entered the course in the oak holder by positioning the pins to read the proper heading: 185, etc. (We found this very effective on our way to Bermuda!)
At the bottom of the staircase from starboard to port and trimmed in blue/white Dutch motif tiles is the beautiful galley with stainless steel counter tops and gimbaled Shipmate three-burner propane stove with oven and broiler. The stainless steel refrigeration box with shelves custom made to hold ½ gallon liquid containers is by Gruenert. The system is their Versimatic model (1993) consisting of two holding plates charged by 110vac or dc via the main engine.
Moving aft one enters the master stateroom with wide single berths port and starboard. On centerline between the two berths is a gentleman's butler's piece dresser. The top surface is hinged, unfolding to make a combination writing surface/chart table. As with the rest of the below decks accommodations one will note the excellent teak butterfly skylight in varnished teak and much of the interior paneling in varnished quarter sawn English white oak.
Passing from the master stateroom back through the galley you enter the English gentleman's salon. Overhead is another stunning butterfly skylight adding ample ventilation over the folding leaf quarter sawn white oak centerline dining table. To port and starboard are two green tufted Ultra Suede settees. Both port and starboard settee backs are hinged to raise upward exposing storage while converting to four upper and lower berths. At the forward end of the main salon are matching port and starboard dressers with leaded glass lockers above. For your comfort on those cool New England evenings is a Luke 24" brass and soap stone solid-fuel heater.
Continuing forward is a full width head with Baby Blake to starboard and Italian marble counter with sink to port. There is storage below the vanity and above. There are doors to close off the head forward and aft for privacy.  Ahead of this compartment is the guest v-berth situated in the forepeak with ample storage.

Remarks

Shiris is a superb example of and English gentleman's yacht. As stated above Shiris was constructed of the finest materials of her times. The present care giver/owner has owned her for over 25 years. The vessel has been stored and maintained by one of New England's finest boatyards, Dion's. They have done all of the work on Shiris over the many years up-grading and maintaining her in offshore condition.

This broker first saw Shiris in 1984 at the Museum of Yachting Wood Boat Regatta, Newport Rhode Island. There she took ‘Best Owner Maintained Yacht' award that year. The following year this broker was able to join the owner and his crew in the 1985 Marion/Bermuda. Though Shiris did not win the crew had fantastic sailing (including one gale) along with the finest galley servings this broker has had offshore!

Do to business and family needs Shiris is sadly for looking for another care giver. Will that lucky person be you?
