The Irwin 41's, made from 1983 until 1985, was a bit of a departure from the rest of the Irwin line as far as it's exterior appearance was involved. This one is hull number 48 and by all accounts quite a departure from the majority of Irwins you see today. "Sanity" has many "non-standard" features to her that sets her apart- Awlgripped spars and davits, a custom stainless bowsprit, all stainless steel portholes- every other Irwin owner I know or broker that's seen her tells me she's the nicest they've ever seen. Just about everything on her was replaced back in 1997; when we purchased her early in 2004 we thought we were in a boat show boat when we stepped inside. Since then we had been living aboard her full time and making improvements to her in preparation for heading to the islands.
Due to some changes in our plans we are sadly putting her up for sale. There's a few more pieces of the puzzle to put on her in my opinion, like a SSB radio and a new liferaft, but that will be up to the new owners.
Accomodations
Sanity is beautifully varnished inside and has eye level opening ports throughout. Forward you will find the V berth, with ash batten hull liner, access to the anchor locker forward and shelves running the full length port and starboard. There is a shelving locker to starboard with a spacious counter space above and four drawers beneath. One large overhead hatch, two portholes and a Hella fan provide all the ventilation you could want. There are 3 stainless reading lights in this cabin. A louvered teak door provides privacy from the main cabin.
Moving aft to port there is a head, with entrance from the V berth or saloon. There is storage behind and below the sink as well as behind the head. One porthole and one overhead hatch provide plenty of ventilation. There is also a large teak trimmed dressing mirror on the bulkhead wall.
Continuing aft into the saloon, to port there is an L shaped dinette and a straight settee to starboard. There is plenty of storage outboard on both sides and behind the seat backs. Three opening portholes, a Hella fan and two hatches provide ventilation; there is overhead lighting and stainless steel reading lights throughout.
To starboard you step down into the galley area. The countertops were replaced in '97 and there is a nice sized deep double sink. The icebox is 7.5 cu. ft., a spillover system and provides plenty of storage space. There is plenty of storage in the galley area, it is well lit and well ventilated- 3 portholes and one hatch in the galley alone!
Continuing to port, you step down into the companionway aft. There is a stand up nav station with room to spread out your charts and lots of storage space in drawers and a locker below. Following that aft is a nice size hanging locker and then the entrance into the aft master cabin.
The aft cabin has an athwartships queen berth with a large mirror on the aft bulkhead. Bookshelves and counterspaces are generous as are the storage areas at the head and foot of the berth. A large double hanging locker has been outfitted with shelves for better storage capacity and there are 6 drawers beneath the berth. There are 4 reading lights (which is the head of the bed anyway?), one Hella fan, three portholes and two hatches for light and ventilation. Off this stateroom is an en suite head with shower and another porthole.
