Introduction

MARIAH is far from the "average" boat, and more closely resembles the construction as found in commercial vessels working the Pacific Northwest / Alaska.  She is keel cooled and has dry exhausts; she has chill plate air conditioning, holding plate refrigeration, a diesel fired furnace for hot water and heat;  paravanes as stabilizers,  four watertight bulkheads with emergency mechanical pumps on both main engines to pump any compartment.  Even though not quite "yacht" finish, she is comfortable, clean, and sea worthy and definitely worth considering if you are into serious cruising.

Her builder, Mr. Gilbert Klingel, was Chief of Metallurgy for ARMCO in Baltimore, and after retiring he started Gwyn Island Boat Works in Maryland.  He built a dozen steel sailboats in the 30' class of the Al Mason design, along with the 42' ketch, D'YARA, the 51' schooner, PIPESTRELLE, the 75' C/B ketch, CLEMENTINE, and his one large power boat the 62' yacht, MANTEO, which is now MARIAH.  In addition to building these steel boats he also built several diving bells that he used for research in the Chesapeake Bay.  Lastly we want to add that he wrote the book "Boatbuilding with Steel" , published in 1973 by International Marine Publishing of Camden, Maine which shows some of the construction details and design of MARIAH in the book.

Accommodations

MARIAH sleeps 6 persons in three separate staterooms, and a 7th in the pilothouse on the large bench seat.  The master has a private head and the two forward staterooms share a second head.

Starting topside at the enclosed pilothouse, you have 330 degree visibility, with the exhaust stack, slightly limiting your view aft.  The pilothouse had wing doors to both port and staboard and the full upper deck.  Access to the topdeck is via a forward stairway from the foredeck, or via a stariway to the pilothouse from the main salon.  The pilothouse has the helm midships and forward, with a very large bench seat across the back of the pilothouse, that can be utilized as an extra berth.

In the main cabin, you have a large U-shaped dinette forward to port, with the top loading, built-in freezer opposite.  Aft of the dinette is a pass through to the U-shaped galley, and opposite is the stairway to the forward staterooms.  The starboard side deck door is opposite the galley, and then going down the companionway aft you have a full length storage cabinet and counter top leading into the main salon.  The salon has a large built-in couch to starboard with room for an occasional chair to port, and a built-in desk forward of the stairwell that accesses the master stateroom and engine room.  Aft of the salon are two double doors that open to the aft deck.  Aside from the two double doors aft, the main cabin has side deck doors to both port and starboard, and located midships.

The master stateroom is aft and the full beam of the boat.  The queen-sized bed is on the centerline.  Generous storage cabinets and closets on both sides of the cabin, and the spacious head is forward and to starboard in the stateroom.

Forward of the small hallway that leads to the master stateroom is the engine room.  This is a full width engine room, giving walk around access to both engines and the main generator. There are numerous storage cabinets, and a work bench forward in the engine room.

The two guest staterooms are forward and below decks, being accessed via the stairwell across from the galley.  The forward cabin has upper and lower berths, while the second guest cabin has a large single berth lower, with an upper as well. The forward shared head has a full stall shower, sink, and marine head.

Remarks

MARIAH has had updates in 1999 and in 2002.   Her updates in 1999 include complete detailing and painting of the engine room and all machinery.  "Sound Down" was installed under the salon carpet for additional insulation. A VHF was added, a GPS, and the 32 Volt battery bank was replaced.   In 2002 additional new electronics were installed in the pilothouse to assist in long range cruising.  Her bottom was freshly painted in February of 2002 at the Derecktor yard in Ft. Lauderdale.

Special note needs to be made regarding the fresh water tank that was cleaned, primed, and then coated with International Paints "Interline 850", a two part epoxy phenolic coating for sealing potable water tanks.  This required an access hole be cut into the tank to perform the work, and this was done in December of 2002.

The engine and generator hours, as recorded,  are original hours on this vessel since new.   For nearly 20 years she was the residence for one of our marine surveyors and docked in the Miami River.  In 1998, and again in 2002 she started seriously cruising again, with new owners at the helm.

Her bilges and hull have been found to be in nearly new condition, when surveyed in 2002.  The bilges are spotless, painted, and dry.  Thanks to her original design all bilge areas are accessible and serviceable.
