Back in the late 50’s, built from Birch, marine plywood and skinned in glass, a wood ‘Inverted Vee’ sport boat was created. It had a shallow inverted V-tunnel merging to a shallow ‘normal’ vee at the transom. The chines ran full length to control skipping, and it carried a lot of outboard horsepower for its size. The shop that built these boats was “Built Rite” located in Santa Monica, California. They also produced some fine hand built wood sailboats. This Built Rite 37 Fisherman is a sturdy offshore boat that is appropriate for a variety of commercial applications or suitable for recreational conversion. In August 2007, the owner received a federal grant to repower the boat. The total repower is valued at about $60,000 ($48,000 federal grant plus costs expended by owner during repower). At this price, the boat is offered with all the advantages of the federal grant repower onto the Buyer! Accommodations: Overnight accommodations are provided for four passengers. Layout includes forward cabin area (sleeps two or three passengers), starboard galley, port lounge area, and overhead pilothouse (sleeps one). The forward cabin area includes two single bunks, board for converting bunks to large V-berth area, fabric covered cushions, four windows with fabric coverings, escape hatch, two teak hanging magazine racks, teak molding, and painted walls/bulkheads/headliner. Port lounge area includes L-shaped settee, under-seat storage, and coat hooks. The pilothouse is fully enclosed and accessible through overhead hatch. The captain can comfortably sit or stand to pilot the boat. Pilothouse features include overhead sunroof/escape hatch, vinyl covered captain’s seat, carpet, five windows, and starboard captain’s bunk. Other interior features include 12-volt light fixtures, 110-volt electrical outlets, and locking companionway door. Galley Equipment: Galley is equipped with new stainless steel three-burner hot plate, L-shaped teak countertop, under-counter storage shelves, and room for small refrigerator. Electronic and Navigational Gear: The helm is located in the pilothouse and is equipped with pedestal wheel, brody knob, forward/reverse throttle set, dash mounted gauges, and overhead mounted electronics. Electronics and navigational gear includes TV, CV-950 Echotech fishfinder, new ICOM IC-M402 VHF marine radio, Furuno flat screen 24-mile radar with closed array, Airguide compass, USCG standard running lights, and mast head light. Electrical/Gas/Plumbing: The boat is equipped with both 12-volt DC and 110-volt AC electrical system. Electrical features include two Group 8 deep-cycle batteries, battery isolator switch, accessory panel, and 2,500-watt inverter. Water and plumbing equipment includes 50-gallon plastic holding tank, thru-hull for head, automatic/manual bilge pumps, and new high water alarm. Note that the boat is not equipped with a head but is plumbed for one. Hull and Deck Gear: The hull is constructed of Birch, marine plywood, and skinned in glass. The decks are fiberglass with non-skid surfacing. Deck layout includes deck at bow, wide walkaround side decks, and large working aft deck. Other deck features include washdown decks, saltwater wash down system, wooden raised gunwales stem to stern, two halogen foredeck lights, aluminum radar mount, wood side deck rails, two side decks scuppers, two halogen aft deck lights, and aft deck lazaretto. Anchor gear includes two 22-lb. anchors, 60’ of 3/8” chain, rode, new stainless steel bow roller, large anchor locker with flush deck airtight hatch, and hydraulic cathead with Hansen fittings. Safety gear includes thirty type I PFD’s, five fire extinguishers, Fire Boy fixed fire system, flare kit, first aid kit, docking line, and fenders. Safety equipment aboard the boat meets Coast Guard inspection. Fishing and sports gear includes hydraulic pinch puller, davit, swim ladder, two side deck removable entry gates for divers, two large portable aft deck fish/dry storage totes, two fishing rod holders (each holds four rods), and urchin net raft (nets not included). The boat was last hauled out for service and bottom paint in August 2007. Equipment/Engine Details: Engine Details: Power package includes 2007 300 HP Cummins QSL9 diesel inboard engine with 600 hours. The boat cruises at 10 knots and reaches maximum speed of 14 knots. At cruising speed, the engine burns 5½ - 6 gallons of fuel per hour. The engine runs great (as it should, it is brand new) and is much quieter than the previous power package. Other engine features include two steel fuel tanks with total 400-gallon capacity, Michigan Wheel prop, twin disc 509 hydraulic transmission, new stainless steel rudder, freshwater expansion tank cooling system, wet exhaust, and new exhaust system built by Tony Athens (Oxnard, California). Remarks: NEW SALT has a rich history as an Island Packers whale watching charter out of Ventura. The current owner is strictly running the boat as a commercial fishery (live fish operation) out of Channel Islands Harbor. The boat is active, and equipment is kept in good working condition.
