Broker's Comment Aurelia is a classic blue water cruiser of the highest ranking and would suit a couple, looking for an older boat that has pedigree of design, build and performance. David Cooper of the famed English design firm Holman and Pye penned the design for a client seeking a fast but tough cruising boat that could be produced in a variety of versions. The Bowman 46, of which approximately 50 were built in the early 70's, came with a choice of yawl or sloop rigs and centerboard or deep keel versions. Another variation on the design was an aft cockpit sloop rigged boat named the Bowman Corsair. Aurelia is a center cockpit, deep (7') draft version with encapsulated lead keel and she is sloop rigged.
In a design review of classic cruisers published in February 2005, Yachting World had the following to say about the Bowman 46: "An undeniably elegant sheer line, subtle tumblehome, classic counter and a low aspect coachroof all add up to give her timeless appeal. What's more is that she sails beautifully - her performance to windward particularly impressed us close reaching in under 10 knots of breeze at 6 - 7 knots for hours on end we could leave the wheel untouched as she sailed herself - always better than we could. Thanks to a fine entry and longish fin keel, her seakindliness added to her appeal. She eats up most short seas without being slowed we set of from St Maarten into 35 knots true to windward. She rode nicely over the building sea her downwind behaviour was impeccable she surfed easily down heavy seas during a following gale - so well balanced and always responsive to the helm."
Aurelia's owners have done many upgrades over their years of ownership, but realizing that their bluewater ambitions are over, are keen to pass her on to new owners who will use her for her intended role. Here is the opportunity to own a rare classic at an extremely reasonable price.
Accommodation Aurelia has a large forward cabin with spacious v-berth, large hatch for ventilation, a short seating area to starboard and storage on the forward bulkhead, along each hull (shelves), below the berth and at either end of the bunk. Aft of the forward cabin, is the large forward head with a vanity, basin with shower and a Raritan head. Opposite the head is a large hanging locker cum storage area.
The cozy salon has a centerline table which can be removed to create more space; a straight settee on the starboard side with storage above, below and behind and a fixed, writing table and storage locker against the forward bulkhead. To starboard, an L-shaped settee also has plentiful storage below, behind and above it. The galley, to port, at the foot of the companionway, is separated from the salon by a low bulkhead it has a lot of workspace and storage, as well as stove, microwave, fridge, freezer and double sinks. Across from the galley, is the nav station, behind which is a low walk-through to the aft cabin. The outboard section of the walkthrough has a hanging locker as well as a large storage area; inboard is a portlight into the cockpit and access hatches into the engine.
The aft cabin can be accessed from the rear of the cockpit or from the walkthrough. It has a large double berth to starboard, cushioned seating areas at different levels to port, with storage on both sides of the cabin. The aft head is forward and to port and comprises a toilet with basin and vanity.
